Chevron Overseas Service was established in the British Army on December 20, 1917. One blue braid was awarded for every 12 months of service "Beyond the Seas" after December 31, 1914, but no more than four blue braid (or five if the soldier served in Russia after the war). One red braid could be awarded for a year or more of service abroad before December 31, 1914 and was worn under blue braid. The chevrons "Overseas Service" were worn on the lower right sleeve of the uniform jacket. Their official wearing was discontinued in 1922.
Such chevrons were also worn in the armies of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
