Unlike most European armies, the insignia of military ranks in the Austro–Hungarian Army were located on the buttonholes. The ranks of the military ranks could be distinguished by the six-pointed stars and galloons that were attached to the collar. Shoulder straps relied on the uniforms of the lower ranks and carried almost no semantic load and were rather a decorative or utilitarian element of the uniform (holding satchel straps or bags on the shoulders). By their presence, it was possible to distinguish the lower rank from the officer. The officers and generals had no shoulder straps at all. There were no emblems, ciphers, or patches on the shoulder straps of the Austro-Hungarian infantrymen. The stars were of several types and two sizes. Simple small ones (smooth stamped aluminum or celluloid) for the category of Mannschaftsstandes (lower ranks). The stars for the Gagisten category were larger in size. They could be either metal or embroidered with thread. The picture below shows the appearance of both types of asterisks. For some categories of officials, eight-pointed sockets were used instead of stars. For some military specialties and branches of the armed forces (musicians, rangers, mountain infantry units), emblems were used along with stars and galloons. The braid for distinguishing military personnel of the Mannschaftsstandes category was 13 mm wide and even narrower with a width of 6 mm. The color of the braid (gold or silver) was determined by the instrument color of the shelf. A 33 mm wide instrument-colored braid was used for officers and generals. The color of the stars was different from the color of the braid. If the braid is golden, then the stars are silver, and vice versa. For generals, the color of the braid is always only golden, and the color of the collar is scarlet (http://www.grwar.ru/library/Rumyantsev-Austro-HungarianArmy1914/RM_AHA1914_07.html ).
