Vidkun Abraham Leuritz Jonssen Quisling (norv. Vidkun Abraham Lauritz Jonssøn Quisling; July 18, 1887, Furesdal, Telemark, Swedish-Norwegian Union — October 24, 1945, Oslo, Norway) was a Norwegian politician and collaborator, head of the Norwegian government during the German occupation during World War II. After unsuccessful attempts by the Nazis to create a more "legitimate" Norwegian government, in 1942 Quisling was appointed Minister-President of Norway. At the same time, the Reichskommissariat was not abolished, so its power was severely limited. Quisling's regime was extremely unpopular, the population and various educational and cultural institutions boycotted his orders. A Resistance Movement was growing in Norway, to which the German authorities responded with repression, often acting without the knowledge of the "head of government". The collaborationist government participated in the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes. Quisling sought from Hitler the restoration of Norwegian sovereignty, but all his demands were rejected by the German side. After the German surrender, Quisling was arrested along with his government. He was tried and found guilty of embezzlement, murder and high treason and executed in the fall of 1945.
