Semis (Latin semis) is a Roman bronze coin equal to ½ ass or 6 ounces. The symbol of semis is the Latin letter S. A bust of Saturn was minted on some coins. Originally a cast coin, like the rest of the Roman republican bronze coins, the semis was withdrawn from circulation shortly before the Second Punic War (218-204 BC). During the Roman Empire, the semis (or semiss) was a gold coin equal to 1/2 aureus. Under Emperor Octavian Augustus, the golden semis weighed 4.59 grams. With Flavia, its weight was 3.27 grams. With Antonines, the weight of semis increases to 3.7 grams. It ceased to be minted by the time of Hadrian's reign (117-138 AD). In the Byzantine Empire, the golden semis (or semissis) was equal to 1/2 solid.
