The United States Marshals Service is a division of the United States Department of Justice, the oldest federal law enforcement agency in the United States. It was created on September 24, 1789. The tasks of the Service include ensuring the activities of federal courts, monitoring the execution of their sentences and decisions, searching, arresting and supervising the detention of federal criminals, auctioning confiscated property, as well as combating terrorism and mass riots. It is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The Service also includes the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy (eng. U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy). An employee of the service, a federal marshal, is appointed by thepresident with subsequent confirmation by the Senate for a four-year term. His position corresponds to the functions of the sheriff's position in the district court. Part of the duties of a federal marshal is performed by his deputy (Eng. deputy marshal).
