The Order of the Sacred Treasure is a Japanese order established by Imperial Edict No. 1 of January 4, 1888. The Order of the Sacred Treasure is awarded to civilians and military personnel, for long impeccable service and seniority, the class of the order depends on the rank and title of the person and the duration of service. The Order was also often used to reward foreigners for services to Japan in cultural and public life. The Order was extended to women by Imperial Edict No. 232 of May 22, 1919. The Order of the Sacred Treasure had 8 degrees until 2003, in 2003 two junior degrees were abolished. This order is awarded to persons who have rendered exceptional services to Japan. This order was quite often received by foreigners as an honorary award for their contribution to the cultural or social life of Japan.
