Order of the Crown of Italy Ordine della Corona d'Italia is an order of the Italian Kingdom. It was established by King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy on February 20, 1868 in memory of the unification of Italy. The order was intended to be awarded to civilians and military personnel. After 1946, he was replaced by the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Until March 18, 1983, the end of his life, King Umberto II continued to award this order. Unlike the more ancient Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, the Order of the Crown of Italy could be awarded not only to Catholics. In the hierarchy of the Orders of Italy, the Order of the Crown is lower than the Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus, in order to be awarded a degree of the Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus, it was necessary to have a similar degree of the Order of the Crown.
