History

The medal "Winter Battle in the East 1941/42 (Eastern Medal)" was established on May 26, 1942. The participants of the battles that broke out on the Soviet-German front in the winter of 1941-1942 were awarded. The execution instructions set out the following conditions, giving the right to be presented for the award: a) Participation in the battle for at least 14 days. For Luftwaffe flight personnel flying combat missions for 30 days, or b) Injury or frostbite sufficient to be awarded the badge "For Injury", or c) Durability in other continuous combat for at least 60 days. The above prerequisites must be fulfilled in the period from November 15, 1941 to April 15, 1942 (both days inclusive), and in the area east of the area of the Commander-in-Chief of the Wehrmacht in Ukraine and in the East, or in the operational area Finland, east of the Finnish-Russian border of 1940. In the event of the death of a serviceman, the medal "Winter Battle in the East 1941/42" was awarded posthumously and handed over to the relatives of the deceased. The medal was also awarded to employees of auxiliary services and organizations: TODT (OT), Imperial Labor Service (RAD), Technical Assistance Service (TN), NSKK, German Red Cross (DRK), Customs and Border Protection, Waterway Protection Police, Railway Protection Service, as well as German allies: Romanian, Italian, Spanish, Hungarian military personnel. There were awards for eastern volunteers. The presentation of the medal lasted until October 15, 1944. The colors of the ribbon were explained in a very interesting way: red — blood shed in battles, white — Russian snow, black — memory of the fallen. The German soldiers very quickly, with malicious sarcasm, dubbed this medal "Ice cream meat" (Gefrierfleischorden) because of the large number of awards for frostbite.
