The Order of the White Elephant เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ อันเป็นที่เชิดชูยิ่ง ช้างเผือก — the Sacred order of the White elephant) is a state award of the Kingdom of Thailand, the order awarded for military and civil merit. The Order of the White Elephant, a royal award depicting the symbol of Siam— was established in 1861 by King Rama IV Mongkut. In 1869, his successor, the reformer King Rama V Chulalongkorn, changed the statute of the order, as a result of which the award received 5 degrees (following the example of the French Legion of Honor), and the medal of the Order (two degrees). Subsequently, the order was retained as a state award of Thailand (since 1939). The Order is awarded on behalf of the King to military and civilian, men and women, Thai citizens and foreigners for services to the Kingdom of Thailand. The degree of dignity (class of the order) depends on the status of the person being awarded. The highest officials of the order are: the Head of the Order — the Sovereign of Thailand (the ruling king), the Grand Master (usually one of the senior crown princes), the Chancellor and the secretary. The number of members of the order awarded with awards of special, I, II and III classes is limited.
