Kaiserlich-Österreichische Franz-Joseph-Orden was established on December 2, 1849 by Emperor Franz Joseph I in honor of the first anniversary of his accession to the throne. This order was awarded for outstanding achievements in the fields of culture, diplomacy, public service and economics, regardless of the recipient's social origin or religion. The award ceased to exist in 1918 with the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
