Order of the White Rose of Finland (fin. Suomen Valkoisen Ruusun ritarikunta, Sweden. Finlands Vita Ros’ orden) is the highest state award of Finland. The Order of the White Rose was established by K. G. Mannerheim on January 28, 1919. The Order replaced the Order of the Cross of Freedom, abolished on the same day. The award criterion is "service for the benefit of the state and the people". The name of the order symbolizes the white roses located on the coat of arms of Finland. The award is given to Finnish citizens and foreigners. The Grand Cross with diamonds and Swords (on the order chain) was awarded only to Marshal K. G. Mannerheim. The Grand Cross with diamonds was awarded to members of the Finnish government: Senator Otto Stenroth, politician and diplomat Karl Enkel and Professor Jan Sibelius. The Grand Cross with Swords was awarded for distinction during the Second World War (to Hjalmar Siilasvuo, Edward Hanell (fin.) rus. and Axel Ayrault) and several foreigners (among them German General E. Dietl). There are data on two awards of the Commander's Cross of the first class with Diamonds and one — Commander's Cross with Swords. After the Second World War, the order retained its position in the award system of Finland. In 1963, the statute of the Order was changed — the Cross of Merit was added and the criteria for awarding the Order to women were defined.
