Cross for the Independence of Bulgaria (bolg. The Independence Cross on Bulgaria 22 September 1908) was established in 1909. The declaration of independence took place on September 22, 1908, when Bulgarian Prince Ferdinand I read out the "Manifesto of Bulgarian Independence" in the Church of the Forty Martyrs in the city of Veliko Tarnovo. Prior to the declaration of independence, the Bulgarian Principality was formally a vassal of the Ottoman Empire and sought the approval of the Turkish Sultan in all foreign policy acts. Independent Bulgaria became known as the Bulgarian Kingdom. The cross was awarded to Bulgarian citizens at the celebration of the declaration of independence of Bulgaria: officers and non-commissioned officers of the Bulgarian Army who are in service, as well as veterans, mayors of towns, civil servants. 11,490 crosses were awarded.
