The design of the obverse is a profile portrait of the reigning emperor. The change of emperors, the change of legends on the obverse of the medal and the signatures of the medallists who cut the stamps of the medals led to a large number of varieties. For example, only the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I was radically changed three times — from adolescence to adulthood (but always in the field marshal's uniform. At the same time, the text "Franz JOSEPH I Emperor of Austria" (FRANZ JOSEPH I. KAISER VON OESTERREICH) was around the portrait of the emperor from 1849, and from 1859 until the last days of his reign: "Franz Joseph I Emperor of Austria by the grace of God" (FRANZ JOSEPH I V.G.G. KAISER V. OESTERREICH). On the reverse are six crossed flags surrounded by a wreath and the inscription "For Bravery" (DER TAPFERKEIT).
