The original medal, issued by the Austrian Maritime Union (Österreichischer Marineverband) to award former sailors of the K.U.K. Kriegsmarine and the Kriegsmarine of Germany. Bronze, stamping, gilding. On the original German type shoe. The obverse of the medal depicts the profile of the famous Austrian naval commander, Vice Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff (1827-1871) in uniform. The inscription: ADMIRAL WILHELM v. TEGETTHOFF is stamped around the circumference, and the dates of his life are indicated below.: 23.12.1827 – 7.4.1871. Wilhelm von Tegetthoff is considered one of the greatest Austrian commanders of the 19th century, a national hero who won landmark victories in the battles of Helgoland (1864) and Lissa (1866) during the Austro-Prussian-Italian War.
