History

Medals of a member of the Japanese Red Cross Society were established with the sanction of the emperor and could be worn by the awarded constantly, including on official uniforms. The main medals were established in 1888 to reward donations to the Red Cross Society: over 10 thousand yen — a Silver medal of a Special Member of the society is awarded; over 30 thousand yen — a Gold Medal of a Special Member of the Society is awarded. The medals of a member of the Japanese Red Cross Society have a diameter of 30 mm. On the obverse of all awards there is a composition consisting of images of a peacock, bamboo, as well as the mythological bird Hoo in combination with the Geneva Red Cross. On the reverse there is an inscription in hieroglyphs running in two horizontal lines: "The 21st year of Meiji, the Japanese Red Cross Society." Medals are connected to the ribbon with the help of a foot and a ring, a sign of the Japanese phonetic alphabet can be stamped on the back of the foot — the stamp of the place of minting. A ribbon of a single sample, made of red moire silk. On both sides of it there are paired longitudinal stripes, spaced from each other and from the edge. The colors of the stripes range from dark purple on early awards to purple on later ones. Moreover, in the era of Sowing, they were also pale blue. Women wear awards on a bow.
