the blade is steel, curved, single-edged, flat without shafts. The weapon number "43" is pierced on the left holomain of the blade. The handle is formed by two wooden cheeks, which are attached to the shank of the blade using three rivets. There is an oval steel sleeve at the base of the handle. The scabbard is made of leather with a brass device consisting of a mouth and a tip. A leather loop is attached to the legs. This specimen is in very good condition and will be a great addition to any collection of edged weapons. Guarantee of authenticity.
the item is in good collector's condition. Chipped and scratched on the cheeks of the handle. Scuffs and traces of use on the scabbard.
Collins produced them from the Spanish-American War to the First World War. They were issued with scabbards made of smooth leather, as well as embossed leather, like this one. It doesn't have the Collins logo embossed on the leather, and it features brass fittings on both ends. The tip end is open, which is exactly right, and allows moisture and juice to drip from below. The belt loop is still intact, with some wear showing signs of use. In general, these machetes did not have US markings. Some of the earlier ones have a handle made of green horn rather than wood. The horn had a greenish color and was exposed to insects/worms. The Collinsa records (from the book "Collins Machetes and Bowies 1845-1965", by D. E. Henry) show that this machete was ordered by the Department of Armaments according to its specifications in February 1913 under the number 1889 (which could be interpreted as a date rather than an order number).
