This is an unofficial commemorative award of the Weimar Republic, intended for veterans of the First World War. The badge was established in Hamburg in 1923 by the Veterans Union of the same name (Deutscher Feld-Ehrenzeichen-Verein). It was awarded to former front-line soldiers who took an active part in the fighting of 1914-1918. Veterans purchased it at their own expense after confirming their front-line experience and receiving an award certificate. The issue ceased in mid-1934 after the introduction of the official state Honorary Cross of the First World War (Hindenburg Cross).
