The order was instituted on 18 November 1836 three Duke: Heinrich von Anhalt-Köthen, Leopold IV Friedrich von Anhalt-Dessau, Alexander Carl von Anhalt-Bernburg in honor of the Margrave Albrecht the Bear. The original order consisted of three classes: Grand cross, commander, knight and two-time medal of merit gold medal of merit and the silver medal of merit.
