The Austro-Prussian-Danish War of 1864 was a military conflict between Denmark on one side and Austria, Prussia, Saxony, and Hanover on the other. Duration: from February 01 to October 30, 1864 (9 months). The roots of the conflict go back to the Danish-Prussian War of 1848-1849. The main cause of the conflict is the dispute over the territories of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Schleswig and Holstein, according to the London Protocols concluded in 1850 and 1852, at the end of the Danish-Prussian war of 1848-1849, were under the rule of the Danish kings, but had territorial sovereignty. In violation of these protocols, a new constitution was adopted in Denmark in November 1863, according to which Schleswig was fully annexed to the Kingdom of Denmark. Austria and Prussia demanded the repeal of this constitution, and as a confirmation of their serious intentions, in December 1863 they occupied the territories of Holstein and Lauenburg. On January 16, 1864, Denmark was given an ultimatum to restore Schleswig to its former status. The ultimatum was rejected and on February 01, Austro-Prussian troops under the general command of Prussian General Wrangel crossed the border of Schleswig. At sea, the Danes had complete superiority. On March 17, off the island of Rügen, they defeated the Prussian fleet, on May 09, off the island of Heligoland, they defeated the Austrian squadron. On land, things were going badly for the Danes. February 06 defeat at Schleswig, April 18 defeat at Duppel, April 29 defeat at Friederisia and evacuation to the island of Alsen, July 15 the whole of Jutland is occupied. On October 30, a peace treaty was signed. Under the terms of the peace treaty, the territories of Schleswig and Holstein were jointly owned by Austria and Prussia.
