The original medal of the reign of Ludwig III is in excellent condition. Silver, stamping. On the original tape.
The Medals of General Merit (Allgemeine Ehrenzeichen) in gold and silver were established as civil awards by the Grand Duke of Hesse Ludwig II (Grosherzog von Hessen Ludwig II) on September 25, 1843. It was planned to put various inscriptions on the reverse of the medals, depending on the merits of the awarded. Ludwig II died in 1848, but since the establishment of the medal, no medals have been made and no awards have been made. Already his son, Ludwig III, on November 14, 1849, introduced his own statute of medals with his own profile. Soon, the awarding of gold and silver medals of General Merit (Allgemeine Ehrenzeichen) also begins.
In 1851, a new type of medals was distinguished from the medals of General Merit (Allgemeine Ehrenzeichen): "Golden Civil Honorary Medals"(Goldene Zivil-Ehrenmedaillen). Later they began to be called differently: "Medals of Merit of the Order of Ludwig"(Verdienstmedaille des Ludewigsordens) and fixed this in the statute on February 22, 1853. And three months later, on May 30, 1853, they again changed their name to the "Gold Medals of the Grand Duke of Hesse of the Order of Ludwig" (Goldene Medaille des Groenherzoglich-Hessischen Ludewigsordens).
On October 25, 1859, the statute was changed again, silver medals were added to the gold ones, and again they were called "Medals of Merit of the Order of Ludwig" (Verdienstmedaille des Ludewigsorden). Most importantly, the medals of General Merit (Allgemeine Ehrenzeichen) differ from the" Medals of Merit of the Order of Ludwig " (Verdienstmedaille des Ludewigsorden) only by a ribbon.
