Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft, abbreviated HAPAG (Hamburg—Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien—Gesellschaft, also known as Hamburg - America Line or in English, Hamburg—America Line) is an enterprise (joint stock company) founded in Hamburg, Germany in 1847 to make flights across the Atlantic Ocean. The president of the company was A. Ballin. Among the founders were prominent citizens such as Adolf Godfroy, Ferdinand Leitz, Karl Wehrmann and others. Soon it became the largest shipping company in Germany, and for a while — all over the world. The writer Hans Evers collaborated with the shipping company during his journalistic work, who received a preferential ticket with the condition to mention the company and the names of its vessels in his works. On September 1, 1970, after 123 years of independent existence, HAPAG merged with the Bremen—based company North German Lloyd, resulting in the formation of a new company - Hapag-Lloyd AG. The asteroid (724) Hapag, discovered in 1911, is named after the company.
