It is a military award of the German Empire, which was established jointly by three free Hanseatic cities — Hamburg, Bremen and Lubeck — in 1915 during the First World War. The Order was awarded for military merit and courage to military personnel and civilians. It is a silver cross patte, covered with red enamel. The coat of arms of the city of Hamburg, a castle with three towers, is engraved in the central round medallion on the front side. On the reverse side of the medallion is the inscription "Fur Verdienst im Kriege" (For services to the war) and the date "1914". The award is on a white ribbon with red stripes (the colors of the Hanseatic League). Similar crosses were issued for Bremen (with a Bremen key) and Lubeck (with a two-headed eagle).
