An original and rather rare shako in satisfactory condition. Leather, black felt, brass. There is no replica, a balaclava with significant losses. It belonged to a soldier of the 5th Regiment, formed in 1867. There were actually three different 5th Maryland Infantry Regiments. The first existed from about 1775 to 1861, when it was disbanded and entered the service of the Confederacy. The second was an Allied regiment from the western part of the state, composed almost entirely of German emigrants, which existed only during the Civil War until 1865. The third, to which this shako belonged, was organized in 1867 (hence the date on the front plate) from Confederate veterans and lasted until the outbreak of World War II, when it was renamed the 175th Infantry Regiment. On one of the petals of the balaclava, the manufacturer's pressed stamp is read: an image of an American double-headed eagle and the inscription "NEW YORK clothing house", founded in 1865. Part of the balaclava petals is missing. Guarantee of authenticity.
