The ceremonial helmet of the 1881 model was worn only at ceremonial events. This helmet is descended from the earlier helmets of the 1872 model, which were worn only by cavalry, light artillery and signal troops. In 1881, a new helmet design was adopted for use by all ordinary troops, as well as infantry, cavalry and artillery officers. For ordinary troops, the helmet was made of black felt, and officers could buy a helmet made of black fabric on a cork or felt basis. On the helmet of all mounted troops there is a brass plume holder resting on a brass base with a motif of oak leaf and acorns, and an eagle and a star are engraved on the plume holder itself. The color of the plume depended on the type of service in which the soldier served: white for infantry officers, red for artillery and yellow for cavalry.
