History

The Green Mountain Boys were a paramilitary organization established in 1770 in the territory between the British provinces of New York and New Hampshire, known as the Grants of New Hampshire, and later, in 1777, as the Republic of Vermont (which later became the state of Vermont). Led by Ethan Allen and members of his extended family, it played an important role in resisting New York's attempts to control territory over which it gained legal control in a territorial dispute with New Hampshire. Some companies participated in the American Revolutionary War, including, in particular, when the "Green Mountain Boys" under the command of Ethan Allen, assisted by Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain on May 10, 1775 and invaded Canada later in 1775. In early June 1775, Ethan Allen and his then subordinate Seth Warner convinced the Continental Congress in Philadelphia to create a regiment of Rangers of the Continental Army from the then grants of New Hampshire. With no treasury, Congress decreed that the Revolutionary Congress of New York should pay for the newly approved regiment. In July 1775, Allen's militia received support from the Revolutionary Congress of New York.

The Green Mountain Boys disbanded more than a year before Vermont declared its independence in 1777 from Great Britain "as a separate, free and independent jurisdiction or state." The Republic of Vermont operated for 14 years before it was admitted to the United States as the 14th state in 1791.

The remnants of the Green Mountain Boys militia were largely recreated as the Green Mountain Continental Rangers. The command of the newly formed regiment passed from Allen to Seth Warner. Allen joined the staff of the Northern Army of New York Major General Philip Schuyler and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Under Warner's command, the regiment fought at the Battles of Hubbardton and Bennington in 1777. The regiment was disbanded in 1779.

Today, the Vermont Army National Guard and the Vermont Air National Guard are collectively known as the Vermont National Guard or "Green Mountain Boys".  Both units use the original Green Mountain Boys battle flag as their banner.
