History

The Medal for Good Behavior is one of the oldest military awards of the US Armed Forces. A variant of the US Navy Good Conduct Medal was established in 1869, the Marine Corps version in 1896, the Coast Guard version in 1923, the Army version in 1941 and the Air Force version in 1963; the Air Force Impeccable Conduct Medal was temporarily discontinued from February 2006 to February 2009, with its subsequent restoration.

The criteria for the medal for conscientious conduct are defined in Executive Orders 8809, 9323, and 10444. The Medal for Good Behavior, each of which belongs to one of the five branches of the US Armed Forces, is currently awarded to any enlisted active military service member of the United States who has worked for three consecutive years in "noble and faithful service." Such service implies that the standard enlistment for military service was completed without any extrajudicial punishments, disciplinary violations or violations of the military tribunal. If a serviceman commits an offense, the three-year mark is "reset" and the serviceman must work for another three years without disciplinary action before conscientious conduct can be sanctioned.

During certain periods of the war, the medal for good behavior can be awarded for one year of faithful service. The Medal for Good Behavior can also be awarded posthumously to any enlisted serviceman who died in the line of duty.
