The Expeditionary Armed Forces Medal is an American award of the US Armed Forces, established by Presidential Decree No. 10977 of December 4, 1961. The medal is awarded for participation in any US military campaign for which no other medal is provided.
The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal may be awarded for participation in the following operations: American military operations; American military operations in support of the United Nations; and American operations in aid of friendly foreign States. The medal is awarded only for operations for which there is no other medal. Since the first award in 1961, the medal has been awarded to servicemen who participated in more than forty-five military campaigns. The first awards took place during the Caribbean crisis and the award was given for military service in the period from October 1962 to June 1963. After this series of awards, the medal was awarded for combat operations in Lebanon, Taiwan, the Republic of the Congo, and for patrolling Berlin between 1961 and 1963.
In the early years of the Vietnam War, the Expeditionary Forces Medal was issued for operations in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal was intended to replace the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. In 1965, with the creation of the Vietnam Service Medal, the awarding of the Expeditionary Armed Forces Medal for the Vietnam War was discontinued. In 1968, the medal was awarded to members of the Navy for protecting the ship USS Pueblo, which was captured in North Korea. In 2003, with the creation of the medal "For Service in the Expeditionary forces of the Global war on Terrorism", the Medal of the Expeditionary armed Forces ceased to be issued for the Iraq campaign. Since 1992, measures have been taken to replace the medals of the expeditionary armed forces with awards of specific military companies.
