History

The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal (CGDSM) is an award of the United States Coast Guard that was created on August 4, 1949. Prior to this date, the Coast Guard soldiers of the Guard were entitled to receive the medal for Outstanding Service in the Navy. The medal is awarded for "exceptionally meritorious service to the government within the framework of great responsibility." The National Security Distinguished Service Medal, which replaced the Transportation Distinguished Service Medal in 2002, is another Distinguished Service medal with a higher priority that can be awarded to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to any member of the U.S. Coast Guard who has distinguished himself solely by service to the U.S. Government in the line of duty great responsibility. The medal can also be awarded to any member of the US security forces who distinguished themselves while working with the US Coast Guard. Exceptional performance of official duties should be clearly above what is usually expected, and should have made a significant contribution to the success of a major command or project. The award is usually given to senior flag officers, such as the Commandant of the Coast Guard. However, this does not exclude the award of a medal to any person who meets the selection criteria. The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal is awarded by the Secretary of Homeland Security. Until 2003, the award was sanctioned by the Minister of Transport, and until 1967 by the Minister of Finance.
