History

The Polish Legion of American Veterans of the USA (PLAV) is an American veteran organization. Despite the name, membership in PLAV is open to all veterans regardless of race, color, religion or national origin. PLAV's motto is "Unity with Heritage". It was formed after World War I as an alliance of Polish-American veterans, created in the summer of 1920 after a meeting of veterans from Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. In December 1920, this association held a temporary congress, and in September 1921 held its first regular congress, at which they changed their name to the Alliance of American Veterans of Polish Mining. In September 1931, the Alliance of American Veterans of Polish Extraction merged with the Polish Legion of the American Army and the organization of veterans from Michigan and formed PLAV. On February 23, 1984, President Ronald Reagan awarded PLAV a Federal charter. In 1992, they abolished the requirement that members be of Polish descent to join PLAV.
