The Spanish-American War (Spanish Guerra Hispano-Estadounidense, English Spanish-American War) was a military conflict between Spain and the United States in 1898. During the fighting, the United States annexed Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, which had belonged to the Kingdom of Spain since the XVI century. Hostilities began in the period after the internal explosion of the battleship Maine in the harbor of Havana, which led to the US intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. As a result, the United States began to dominate the Caribbean region and seized Spain's Pacific possessions. This led to U.S. involvement in the Philippine Revolution and eventually the Philippine-American War.
