History

"Dmitry Donskoy" is a Russian ocean-going armored cruiser (semi-armored frigate), the lead in a series of two ships (the second - "Vladimir Monomakh"). Launched on 18 August 1883, she entered service in the autumn of 1885. In 1904, "Dmitry Donskoy "(under the command of Captain 1st Rank Ivan Nikolaevich Lebedev) became part of the 2nd Pacific Squadron under the flag of Vice Admiral Z. P. Rozhestvensky and, having made all the way around the Cape of Good Hope with the squadron, on May 14, 1905, entered the day battle in the Korean Strait as part of a column of cruisers under the flag of Rear Admiral O. A. Enqvist. At one point in the battle, "Dmitry Donskoy" and "Vladimir Monomakh" covered the lost control of the "Aurora", being under a hail of shells from Japanese cruisers. In response, the old Russian cruisers managed to damage several Japanese ships. Meanwhile, the high-speed "Oleg", "Pearl" and "Aurora" returned to control, having developed full speed, left the battle. The slow-moving "Dmitry Donskoy" was left alone, managed to avoid the attacks of the destroyers, waited for the night and went to Vladivostok with a 9-knot course, having extinguished the lights.

Of all the ships of the 1st rank that were part of the squadron, "Dmitry Donskoy" managed to come closest to the goal of the voyage-Vladivostok. During the night of May 14-15, she sailed north with the destroyers Bedovy and Grozny. In the morning, near the island of Dazhelet in the Sea of Japan, the group was overtaken by the destroyer "Buyny", which was carrying the wounded Admiral Rozhestvensky and his staff. The machines of the "Buyny" were in very poor condition, and he himself was overloaded with people rescued from the battleship "Oslyabya". Admiral Rozhestvensky and his staff switched to the " Bedovy "and, taking the destroyer" Grozny "with them, left in the direction of Vladivostok, leaving the destroyer" Buyny " in a very difficult situation. It was decided to transfer all the people from the "Violent" to the cruiser, and to sink the destroyer. The overload lasted about 5 hours, after which the Dmitry Donskoy fired several shots at the doomed destroyer. However, time was lost, and at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, 6 Japanese fast cruisers ("Naniwa", "Takachiho", "Akashi", "Tsushima", "Otowa", "Niitaka") and 4 destroyers appeared on the horizon, which took the lone ship in a pincer. Refusing to surrender and firing back at both sides, "Dmitry Donskoy" managed to knock out two enemy cruisers ("Naniva" and "Otava"), but he himself received such damage that he could not continue the way — the pumps could not cope with the water coming through the holes; the rear pipe was shot down, which greatly reduced the thrust and reduced the speed of the already slow-moving vessel. During the night, the crew, the crew of the "Buyny", the rescued from the "Oslyabi" and the mortally wounded commander were transported to the island (a few days later he died in captivity). At dawn, the senior officer of the ship, K. P. Blokhin, took the cruiser away from the shore and opened the kingstons. At 9: 15 a.m. on May 16, the Dmitry Donskoy sank without lowering the flag.
