A distinctive feature of the caps 1870s – 1900s from the later was the seam on the band that are not the front and rear that allowed them to strike on the band numbers and letters, first expanded, and since 1874 printed by the stencil with yellow paint. In 1881, supposed to have on the band, coded by name not unit (company, squadron), and the military unit (the badge was attached to the crown). Fortress engineer company before each fortress, different coded messages in the form of the abbreviated name of the fortress (Kronstadt, "Cu.") and the letter "S.". The band, like all engineers, was a black cloth, edging red. In 1907 put coded messages on the band to have, but instead attach the cockade; in 1907 – 1909 and 1914 introduced a few new models of caps with a seam in front of the band. Quite a rare item in good collectible condition.
