The Order of St. Alexander (bolg. The Order of Sveti Alexander is a state award of the Principality and, since 1908, of the Kingdom of Bulgaria. The Order was established by Decree of Prince Alexander Battenberg on December 25, 1881 (January 6, 1882) and named in honor of his patron saint. It was intended to reward military and civilians for their bravery, for public services, as well as as a sign of the personal favor of the prince, and later the tsar of Bulgaria. After the abolition of the monarchy in Bulgaria in 1946, the order continued to exist, but was finally abolished in 1948 by the new Communist government of Bulgaria, along with other royal awards, and since then has not been restored as a state award, but has been preserved as a dynastic one. The Order is intended to reward military and civilians for their bravery, for public services, as well as as a sign of the personal favor of the Prince of Bulgaria, who is the master of the Order of St. Alexander.
